Recycling scrap
“BBL Batteries takes its commitment to the Environment very seriously, currently only 27% of all batteries sold in the UK are recycled, the rest end up in landfill where the chemicals contained them cause pollution and contamination to the surrounding area, and over time soil as they start to leak heavy metals such as lead or mercury and corrosive acids.
In 2017 it was estimated that 39348 tonnes of batteries were sold in the UK, and currently the UK is falling short of its 45% Battery collection target set by the EU.
In 2009 a directive was issued to minimise this negative impact on the environment . It was not primarily a carbon reduction initiative but was a way to encourage producers and therefore distributors to take responsibility for this waste and make it easier for the end user to recycle their batteries.
As a producer of automotive batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, Regulation 36, we, Bristol Batteries Ltd t/a BBL Batteries are obliged to collect, free of charge and within reasonable time, waste automotive batteries for treatment and recycling from final holders e.g. garages, scrap yards, end-of-life vehicle Authorised Treatment Facilities, Civic Amenity Sites etc. We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new automotive batteries on the market”
