Marine Applications – Battery Technology
Continuing from our previous blog “Marine Battery Maintenance – A Guide” we’re taking a look at the different battery technologies available for marine purposes. Modern boats of all sizes require a certain level of power to start the engine and maintain a number of electronic devices on-board.
Marine ‘cranking’ batteries, or starter batteries, are designed solely to start an engine. A short burst of power is required to start an engine and that’s exactly what cranking batteries provide. Similar to standard car batteries, cranking batteries have been designed to get the engine started and be as reliable as possible. Marine cranking batteries cannot, however, be used to power on-board electronics, for that, deep cycle batteries is required.
Deep cycle marine batteries, also known as cyclic batteries, are designed to produce and maintain power for extended periods of time. For example, lighting, communication equipment, power sockets and GPS all rely on battery power; deep cycle batteries can be drained and recharged many times.
There is a third type of marine battery, the dual-purpose battery. In some cases, a dual purpose, or hybrid battery may be suitable; dual purpose marine batteries provide both cranking and auxiliary power. If space is limited or on-board weight is a concern, a dual 2-in-1 battery might be suitable for you. Dual-purpose batteries can be successfully utilised to power a trolling motor, and, with low self-discharge, they’re ideal for seasonal use.
