Battery Recycling

BBL Batteries takes its commitment to the Environment very seriously, currently only 3% of all batteries sold in the UK are recycled, the rest end up in landfill where the chemicals contained them cause pollution and contamination to the surrounding area, and over time soil as they start to leak heavy metals such as lead or mercury and corrosive acids.

In 2009 it was estimated that 40,000 tonnes of batteries were sold in the UK, and on the current recycles percentage means that 97% end up in landfill, thats an enormous 38,800 tonnes.

In September 2008 a directive was issued to minimise this negative impact on the environment .  It was not primarily a carbon reduction initiative but was a way to encourage producers and therefore distributors to take responsiblity for this waste and make it easier for the end user to recycle thier batteries.

BBL Batteries can provide you with one or more recycling bins*, when these are nearly full we will then arrange to come and collect them, the bins will then be sealed and we will then process them.  For smaller amounts of recycled batteries, we can arrange local collections where again we shall handle the items on your behalf and ensure they, like the bulk recycling, are handled responsibly and in line with the 2008 Directive.

Should you have any further queries on recycling and legislation please contact any one of our branches and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
